Roadrunner Status

January 2006 update:

Cable Internet service is available through
Time-Warner Cable either from RoadRunner or Earthlink.  There doesn't seem to be much difference in the service except that RoadRunner is $59.95/mo if you don't get cable tv and Earthlink is $41.95/mo if you don't get cable tv.

Telephone service is not available through Time-Warner in spite of their heavy advertising of this service in the local papers.  I have subscribed for phone service through
Vonage which works well, so far, and is quite cheap.

June 2005 update:

RoadRunner is now generally available.

March 5, 2005 update:

TW is running cable up Abbey Road and Middle Way.  Hopefully it will soon be up Erika's Walk as well.

The TW sales department seems to be completely unaware of what is going on.  I talked to the construction crew and they said it "would be a while" but couldn't give me a date.

December 26, 2004 update:

I saw a TW truck at the end of my driveway and went out to ask the man in the truck what they were doing.  He had a parcel map and was planning the installation drops for the cable service.  He had no date for this.

A while back the underground conduit from the Wittenberg Road to the first utility pole was installed for the cable.

It has been very difficult to get any useful information from TW.  I called the construction office and the woman said that the service would be installed either before the end of the year or in first quarter 2004.  She seemed offended when I suggested their engineering department probably had a more specific plan.  She said she would check and call me back, but not too surprisingly, I never heard anything back.

In spite of TWs lack of communication, it looks like Roadrunner service should be available at least in the first half of 2005.

June 7 update:

Progress is slow.  I have been in touch with Jeremy about every two weeks.  He is waiting for TW to respond to the draft contract he sent them.  TW has not returned his calls asking for their position.

May 4 update:

Jeremy Wilbur met with Time-Warner and has negotiated the new lease which calls for "immediate" extension of cable, including Internet, into Riverby.  A specific date has not been given but it is expected to be within a few months of the Town Board meeting that approves the agreement.  The date of the Town Board meeting has not yet been set.

March 4, 2004 update:

We have finished the process of canvassing the approximately 70 properties in Riverby.  44 people have signed the petition.  Most of the others were not home when we came by.

On Thursday, March 4, Alan Carey and David Adler met with Jeremy Wilbur, the Woodstock town supervisor, to present the petition.

The good news is that Jeremy had spoken with Roger Wells, the Time-Warner regional manager who told him verbally that they intended to extend Roadrunner service into Riverby.  There was no specific statement of a plan for when this would be done or which specific roads would be covered.

Jeremy said that he would today send a cover letter with his signature along with our petition.  He has a meeting scheduled with Time-Warner the end of this month.

In April the town board will be reviewing the Time-Warner franchise contract but as it was explained to us, the town doesn't really have a lot of leverage to force a cable company to extend into areas it doesn't want to serve.  We learned a lot about the whole cable franchise process but it probably isn't worthwhile to include it here.

We asked Jeremy if we should be contacting Time-Warner directly to complain.  He thought that it would be helpful but he suggested that we wait until he contacts us about the opportune time in the coming month or so..

As we were leaving the meeting we coincidentally ran into people from Webjogger Wireless who are negotiating with the planning board to provide wireless Internet service in Woodstock.  It wouldn't be straightforward to provide it in Riverby and the cost is significantly (double) higher than Roadrunner.

Jeremy also brought up the possibility of broadband powerline Internet which has been in the news lately and was going to call Central Hudson about this.  From looking online, this appears to be in its infancy and not a near-term solution for Riverby in any case.
